Hospital Affiliation and Competency Evaluation Letters –
Why the Confusion?

DATE:  January 29, 2010

TIME:    1:00 EST, 12 noon CST, 11 A.M. MST, 10 A.M. PST

LENGTH of PROGRAM:  90 minutes

Presenters
Christine "Cris" Mobley, CPMSM, CPCS,
President, C Mobley & Associates, LLC,
Colorado Spgs, CO

Terri Schnieder, CPMSM,
Director, Medical Staff Services,
Tahoe Forest Health System, Truckee, CA

Description:

  • Who signs hospital affiliation requests at your facility?
  • Who do you send your requests to for affiliation and/or competency evaluation?
  • What is your policy for responding to other facilities requesting information?
  • Do you respond with a "canned-form letter" response or does someone complete the other facilities’ questionnaire, or do you use a  combination of both?

If you are having difficulty with this issue, then this webinar will be helpful.  Discussion will include a review and interpretation of the Joint Commission Standards, what they do and do not require and options for compliance.  A competency assessment differs greatly from an affiliation document – discussion will include a definition of both and in which situation each should be used.

We will also discuss the legal responsibilities of each institution (requesting and receiving) and who should and should not be completing these requests for information. Examples will be provided of both appropriate and inappropriate request forms/letters. Terminology such as “good standing” will be defined and the similarities and differences in the information required by hospitals versus other types of health care organizations will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives include:

  • Identify the JC requirements for responding to other organizations
  • Integrate legal responsibilities with real world situations
  • Evaluate sample documents and identify pros and cons of language used

Topics such as telemedicine, credentialing by proxy,  FPPE and OPPE as relevant to advanced practice nurses and physician assistants, behavior issues,  tips on demonstrating the value of the MSD, best verification resources, changes in Joint Commission standards,  differences between the DNV (NIAHO) and Joint Commission credentialing standards,  privileging for new technology and how to achieve professional recognition will be addressed.
